Murphie Chappell
Associate General Counsel
Murphie Chappell joined OIIGC in February 2022 as the Title IX Coordinator and Assistant General Counsel. She was promoted to Associate General Counsel in August 2023. Her practice focuses primarily on legal issues related to student affairs, athletics, academic affairs, employment, affiliation agreements, and public records.
Prior to joining the OIIGC, Murphie served as UNC Greensboro’s Title IX Coordinator for seven years. Additionally, she contracted with Smith, Moore Leatherwood (Now, Fox Rothschild) as a part-time attorney on their litigation team where she defended higher education institutions against Title IX and employment claims. Prior to working at UNC Greensboro, Murphie served as the Staff Attorney at the North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault where her practice focused on representing victims of sexual assault in immigration, civil, criminal, and campus misconduct proceedings.
Murphie is a graduate of Guilford College and North Carolina Central University School of Law where she participated on the trial advocacy team and the Public Interest Law Organization and volunteered for the Driver’s License Restoration Project.
Murphie is a past co-chair of the UNCG Staff Senate and a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) and the Education section of the North Carolina Bar Association. Murphie most recently presented a Title IX panel session for the Education Section of the North Carolina State Bar and led a discussion group at the Spring 2023 NACUA Discrimination Law CLE Workshop. She continues her pro bono driver’s license restoration work by volunteering with the NC Pro Bono Resource Center.
